Chapter 336: A misunderstanding
Chapter 336: A misunderstanding
Hearing a thunderous roar that shook the earth, the formation on the ground began to boil.
A massive pool of blood emerged from beneath the earth, its power already far beyond the scope of a First-Tier Divine Skill.
Ophelia folded her wings around herself, preparing to endure the attack head-on.
Then—
Bang!
The fragments of the scythe within the formation were suddenly pulled apart by invisible threads.
The ultimate strike that had been on the verge of being unleashed was destroyed.
"Huh? What’s going on?"
Ophelia instinctively looked toward Gherlos.
"I... don’t owe... you..."
While being sent flying, Gherlos had used the last of her strength to stop the final attack.
She had originally included herself within the blast radius, intending to die along with her enemies.
Who would have thought that Ophelia would knock her away from the formation?
Since the other woman had unexpectedly saved her life, she had no reason to attack the person who had just rescued her.
"What a shame... I couldn’t avenge my family."
"ROOOAR!"
The screeches of countless Night Demons echoed below.
Gherlos slowly closed her eyes.
Phield, rushing over, finally relaxed when he saw that his Divine Chosen was unharmed.
Pushing off the ground, he leaped into the air and caught Gherlos, who had already resigned herself to death.
He had originally intended to imitate the movies and catch her in a dramatic princess carry.
Unfortunately, the Night Demons leaping up around him immediately distracted him.
After cutting down the monsters lunging at him, he turned back to catch Gherlos.
Instead, he ended up taking a direct hit to the face.
His entire face was buried in her chest.
"Mmph! Damn it, I’m suffocating!"
Phield cursed incoherently.
The impact nearly knocked him unconscious.
Immediately adjusting his position, he tucked the unconscious Gherlos under one arm.
For a moment, he had no idea where to put his hands.
His face reddened slightly.
"Definitely a C-cup."
With only a brief glance, Gherlos had been thoroughly exposed.
"Ophelia is really something. This is the first time I’ve ever seen clothes get destroyed this completely."
After all, Ophelia’s offensive Divine Skills relied almost entirely on brute force.
Removing his black robe, Phield wrapped it around Gherlos.
Only then was he able to stop himself from getting distracted by the view.
The moment he landed, while the two massive buffs were still active, he charged forward with sword in hand.
Cutting a bloody path through the tide of Night Demons, he successfully reunited with Ophelia.
"You worked hard."
Only after seeing Ophelia did Phield finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"You can praise me after we get back. There are way too many Night Demons here."
Ophelia raised her hand.
The Sapphire Dragon enhancement on Phield condensed into a gem and returned to her palm.
Embarrassed, she held up her hands and smiled awkwardly.
"This enhancement is unique. It’s part of my Divine Artifact."
"I didn’t use it on you before because I needed it for combat and command."
"You don’t need to explain."
Phield gave her a thumbs-up.
"I trust you all unconditionally."
"Hehe, now that’s more like a proper lord."
Spreading her wings, Ophelia carried both of them into the air.
After flying north for a short while, they spotted Rosalia plowing through monsters like a living bulldozer.
After regrouping, they took advantage of the remaining daylight and found a tavern to use as a temporary shelter.
"Phew... without an army helping out, this young lady is exhausted."
The moment she entered, Rosalia gathered her skirt and collapsed into a chair.
She was so tired that she could barely maintain her usual elegant posture.
"Those annoying rat monsters keep jumping around. Cutting them down is way more troublesome than it should be."
"Night Demons once caused a plague in the Blue Dragon and the Magic Tower United Empire. Quite a lot of people died back then."
After walking around the tavern twice and tossing out the residents’ scattered remains, Ophelia began dragging tables, chairs, and other furniture to barricade the exits.
"Normally, wild Night Demons don’t use humans for reproduction unless someone teaches them to do so."
"Once a Night Demon gets a taste for it, it’ll pass that special reproductive method down to its offspring."
She grabbed several bottles of honey mead from the shelves and continued her explanation.
"To eliminate the source of the plague, you need to kill the progenitor Night Demon. Once it’s dead, its descendants will stop using humans for reproduction."
"That’s actually incredible."
Phield could not help but marvel.
"That’s seriously twisted. Who would teach Night Demons to use humans for reproduction in the first place?"
"Wait..."
The firewood Phield was arranging nearly fell from his hands as he abruptly stood up.
Looking at the distracted Jamie, he asked in a strange tone,
"When you first told me about Gherlos, how exactly did she end up here?"
"We traded for her from those people in Night Owl."
Jamie could not understand why Phield was suddenly asking.
Phield narrowed his eyes.
"And before that? Why was she with Night Owl?"
"Why do you look so nervous, Phield? Is it really that important?"
Jamie shrank back slightly.
"Our sect doesn’t care about things like that. Non-direct-line Divine Chosen are simply handed over to the followers for collective baptism."
"As long as their will is broken and they’re given the appropriate drugs, they’ll soon become obedient and compliant."
"They’ll even grow attached to it."
"Don’t worry about where they came from. After enough rounds, they become livestock."
Jamie pouted.
"Though I heard she came from a baronial family that was wiped out."
"You people are truly disgusting."
Phield felt physically sick hearing that.
Rubbing his throat, he cleared it before speaking.
"I suspect the Night Demons were..."
"That’s right. I released them."
A weak voice suddenly came from behind.
"Thanks in large part to Miss Jamie’s collection."
Gherlos struggled into a sitting position.
Though still dizzy and weak, she could not suppress the cold sneer on her face.
"Miss Jamie’s treasured Vigor Elixir."
"I mixed it into the Night Demons’ feed."
"And I captured the female believers and threw them to the monsters."
"Aren’t you people fond of that sort of thing?"
"Being the monsters’ wives should have satisfied you perfectly."
"It was you! You traitor!"
Jamie’s eyes widened in disbelief.
"I thought you were obedient! I was even planning to find a powerful lord for you!"
"And this is how you repay me?"
"You’re just stupid."
Gherlos openly cursed her despite facing a Third-Tier Divine Chosen.
"The drugs and breeding have destroyed your mind."
"You’re nothing more than a drooling idiot now."
"Everyone in your sect has gone insane."
"You all deserve to die."
"So that’s what happened."
Phield finally understood.
"I thought you were Jamie’s subordinate."
"I was actually planning to recruit you using Jamie’s name."
Who would have guessed this woman was the complete opposite?
Not only was she not Jamie’s subordinate, she had tried to cut him down the moment they met.
"Well, misunderstandings happen."
Gherlos turned toward Phield and forced out a weak smile.
Her hand unconsciously rested on her lower abdomen.
"The moment I woke up and realized I was still untouched, I knew it had all been a misunderstanding."
"You’re not members of the sect."
"Just how deranged is the Shadow World Sect?"
Phield was genuinely speechless.
"It’s all for the ideal."
"Necessary sacrifices."
Jamie glared at Gherlos with poisonous resentment.
She had originally hoped to use Gherlos to escape.
Now it seemed she would have to find another way.
"Um..."
Gherlos hesitated for a moment.
"You captured me because..."
